From Molly Ivins column in the Sac. Bee on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2003.
"There's an old newspaper saw, 'Error runs around the world before the truth can get its boots on.' The sad case of the distortions of the Jessica Lynch story (she did not receive multiple gunshot wounds; she was not stabbed; she was not fighting to the death; she was apparently injured in a car accident; the famous rescue at the hospital did not involve any firefights; in fact, there were no Iraqi troops in the area, and there was no one there but the Iraqi doctors, who had been taking very good care of Lynch) amount to what the BBC -- not normally noted for overstatement -- called, "One of the most stunning pieces of news management ever conceived."

WELL, WHERE ARE THEY?? We were told we were going to war because Iraq had 5,000 gallons of anthrax, several tons of VX nerve gas, between 100 tons and 500 tons of other toxins, including botulinin, mustard gas, ricin and Sarin, 15 to 20 Scud missiles, drones fitted with poison sprays and mobile chemical laboratories.

I've nothing to say today, so I thought I would let this quote of Herbert Read say what I am thinking:
"In History, stagnant waters, whether they be the stagnant waters of
custom or those of despotism, harbor no life; life is dependent on the
ripples created by a few eccentric individuals. In homage to that life
and vitality, the community has to brave certain perils and must
countenance a measure of heresy. One must live dangerously if one wants
to live at all." - Herbert Read

If you are, like me, having real trouble finding gems of truth embeded in the US press, may I suggest reading The Guardian? It is found at guardian.com and is published in the UK, from whence most of the people in this country's forebears came and who are still more like us than any other people. Seems that the Brits are well ahead of us Americans on getting to the bottom of the WMD lies that Bush and Blair spread with the implicit help of US media. Go read it, you will be shocked how little real news you are getting through the US controlled media.

There comes a time in every century and this is historically correct, when a people become sated with the success of their culture (in other words, "fat and lazy") too dumb to vote and too stupid to read about that which is happening to their country. Usually there is a threat against their well being, answered by a "savior", a war-like leader who promises safety for all if they will give him unchecked power. This is the time in history that tyrants like Hitler are approved to lead their people. Now is such a time in America and Bush is just the man to do the job. I am afraid it is too late for us, I believe Albert Gore was the last elected President of these United States and that Bush is the first Dictator, though likely he will use another designation. We shall eagerly await the results of the so-called elections of 2004. These neo-conservative right wing Republicans are ready if you are.

The world's political big-wigs are having their get together in Evian. Did anybody else notice that if you reverse the spelling of Evian you get naive? And aren't they all?
